The Utah Skatin’ Utes traveled down to Provo Saturday to take on BYU and left with something that they haven’t had in a very long time. A win. Thanks to a huge second period which included eight total goals, Utah was able to take down the Cougars 6-5 for their first win against BYU since before the team had a three year hiatus four years ago. Beau Bertagnolli added two more goals to his impressive stats over the last couple of weeks and acted as the catalyst for the Utah offense.
The key player for Utah however was freshman goalie Andy Hill. In his third career start, Hill shut down the Cougar offense, allowing five goals on more than fifty shots. Trailing 2-0 after the first period, Utah (13-12) exploded for six goals in the second to put the Skatin’ Utes up 6-4 after two periods. BYU was able to add a goal late in the third and some key penalties gave the Cougars many chances to even the score. But Utah’s penalty kill was superb, killing several penalties in the final five minutes.
The Utes had the weekend off and are now preparing for their road trip to Colorado February 12th and 13th, where they’ll take on Metro State and the 3rd ranked Northern Colorado Bears.
