Salt Lake City, UT
The University of Utah Skatin’ Utes hit the road last week to take on the third-ranked Utah State Aggies and came away with a 5-2 win last Thursday night.
The Aggies came out strong in the first ten minutes of the game, scoring the game’s first goal with 15:10 left in the first period to take a 1-0 lead. After the opening goal, the Utes would find an answer later in the period as David Barnes scored to even up the score at 1-1 with 3:55 left in the first period. The score would remain tied when the horn sounded to end the first period.
The second period belonged to Utah as Tyler Kugler scored 1:50 into the period and Chase McDonald added another halfway through the period to give the Utes a 3-1 lead after two periods.
The Aggies would find new life in the third period as they scored just 25 seconds into the period to cut Utah’s lead to 3-2. But goals by Nick Fornelius and David Barnes later in the final period would extend Utah’s lead to 5-2 and the Utes would cruise to the victory over their in-state rivals.
Utah outshot the Aggies 41-31 in the game as Chris Komma picked up his eight win of the season by stopping 29 of 31 shots. With the win, the Utes won the season series with Utah State with a 1-0-1 record against their rivals from Logan. The win gave Utah its fifth against in-state teams as the Utes went 5-0-1 against the teams in the state of Utah this season. The Utes will have two more games against in-state opponents in the Wasatch Cup, which will be determined in a couple of weeks.
The win for Utah was its 18th of the season as the team now has an 18-2-2 record on the season with two games remaining in the first semester. The Utes will take on #10 UNLV at home this weekend to close out the semester, with Friday’s Teddy Bear Toss game starting at 9pm MT.
