PAC-8 Power Rankings #8
Most of the teams in the conference are now done until January after a big week for some of the teams. The rest will wrap up this week and stayed tuned for next week as we’ll grade all eight teams as they reach the halfway point.
1.(1) #7 Utah Utes (15-5, 6-0 PAC-8) 2nd in Conference
Last Week: 3-1 (Win vs #4 CSU 4-3 OT, Loss vs #5 SJSU 2-4, Win vs #10 CU 6-1, Win vs #13 DU 5-4 OT)
This Week: Home vs BYU (Fri.), @ BYU (Sat.)
A great showing by the Utes at the Western Showcase which should help solidify their spot in the top ten in the West. Utah wraps up the first semester this weekend with a home and home against rival BYU.
2.(2) #14 Oregon Ducks (13-1-2, 8-0 PAC-8) 1st in Conference
Last Week: 2-0 (Win vs UW 3-2, Win vs UW 7-6 OT)
This Week: Off until January 11th
The Ducks wrap up their first half in a big way, reclaiming the I-5 Cup for the first time since 2008 and clinching a spot in the PAC-8 tourney in February. They are now off until they head to Utah in January for the series of the year in the PAC-8.
3.(3) Washington Huskies (9-7, 4-3-1 PAC-8) 3rd in Conference
Last Week: 0-2 (Loss @ Oregon 2-3, Loss @ Oregon 6-7 OT)
This Week: Home vs Western Washington (Fri.), Home vs Western Washington (Sat.)
The Huskies reign at the top of the PAC-8 seems to be in jeopardy after losing this weekend to Oregon. UW is in third right now, but is 0-4 against the top two teams in the conference. The Huskies wrap it up this weekend against NAIH Western Washington.
4.(4) UCLA Bruins (5-8, 4-4 PAC-8) 4th in Conference
Last Week: 0-1 (Loss vs CS Fullerton 3-8)
This Week: Off until January 11th
Just one game this past week as the Bruins had to postpone the LMU game. Despite the loss to Fullerton, UCLA went 5-2 in November and are have a good shot at going back to the PAC-8’s. The Bruins are off until they meet USC with the PAC-8 standings on the line.
5.(5) USC Trojans (6-11-1, 2-3 PAC-8) 5th in Conference
Last Week: 1-2 (Loss @ #9 LMU 1-2, Loss vs #9 LMU 5-6, Win vs CS Fullerton 4-1)
This Week: @ Cal State Northridge (Sat.)
It was a mixed bag for the Trojans this week as they beat Fullerton but lost a pair of heartbreakers to Loyola Marymount. USC has one more games this semester against Northridge on Saturday.
6.(6) Cal Golden Bears (6-7-1, 1-5-1 PAC-8) 6th in Conference
Last Week: 2-1 (Loss @ UC Davis 1-7, Win vs Stanford, Win vs Santa Rosa 10-5)
This Week: Off Until January 19th
The Golden Bears went 2-1 in their last week of 2012, including put the final nail in the four game sweep over rival Stanford. Cal is now off until they’ll travel to Eugene to take on the Ducks.
7.(7) Washington State Cougars (3-9, 0-8 PAC-8) 7th in Conference
Last Week: 1-1 (Loss @ Gonzaga 3-8, Win @ Gonzaga 5-4)
This Week: Off Until January 11th
The Cougars split the weekend in Spokane to move to 3-9 on the year so far as they head to the break. On a positive note, Wazzu is the only team to beat the Bulldogs this year. And they’ve done that twice.
8.(8) Stanford Cardinal (0-9) 8th in Conference (On Provisional Status)
Last Week: 0-2 (Loss @ Santa Rosa 3-11, Loss @ Cal)
This Week: Off Until January 11th
The Cardinal finish the first semester with a pair of losses to Santa Rosa and Cal. They’ll look for win number one in January against Santa Clara.
