David Barnes was named Men’s Division 2 Assistant Coach on July 8, 2021.
Barnes is a Utah native who started playing hockey at the age of 8 after first seeing the sport play out in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Barnes played a mix of AA & AAA during his youth hockey career. After graduating high school, he played 2 seasons for the SLC Jr. Moose (currently known as the Utah Outliers) in the Western States Hockey League (WSHL).
Barnes was a key part of the two most successful ACHA D2 campaigns in program history, aiding in helping the team qualify for nationals in back-to-back seasons, finishing 6th and 11th respectively while leading all Defensemen in points both seasons.
Barnes graduated from the David Eccles School of Business in the Spring of 2019, leaving the program as a Freshman of the Year Award Recipient, Iron Man Recipient, 2x PAC 8 Champion, 3x Wasatch Cup Champion, Program Leader in penalty minutes and served as Alternate captain for 2 seasons.
Upon graduating, David married his wife, Tasia in April 2019 and they welcomed their first child, Sophie, to their family in June 2020 and their second child, Amelia in June of 2023. David works in Utah’s rapidly growing tech industry and spent two seasons coaching the 14u Travel Team for the Utah Golden Eagles youth program before joining Utah Hockey’s coaching staff.
