Utah M1 releases 2023-2024 schedule
August 25, 2023
Salt Lake City, Utah
The University of Utah M1 hockey program has announced its 2023-2024 regular season schedule. The Skatin’ Utes will enter their seventh season at the ACHA M1 level. This will be their third season as a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey League (WCHL). Utah is seeking its first appearance in the American Collegiate Hockey Association M1 National Tournament. Last season Utah finished ranked 17 in the final ACHA M1 rankings.
Utah starts the season with 5 consecutive road series, spanning from September 29 to October 27. This will be an early test for the Utes as they play every single weekend in this stretch.
The Utes will start their season in the desert in Tucson against the University of Arizona Wildcats. Friday and Saturday, September 29 and 30 will not only kick off the season for Utah but also WCHL league play. Utah went 2-2 against U of A last season, splitting both the home and road series.
Continuing their travels to Arizona, Utah will match up against the Grand Canyon University on October 6 and 7. The Utes have found success against GCU, picking up 6 wins in 8 match-ups in their last two seasons against the Antelopes.
Heading east, Utah will travel to the Great Lakes State to face off against Grand Valley State University and Calvin University. The Utes play GVSU on October 12 and Calvin on October 13 and 14 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In one meeting with Calvin in November 2018, Utah beat the Knights 6-3 in Michigan. This will be Utah’s first meeting with GVSU.
Sin City awaits the Utes on October 20 and 21 for a match-up against WCHL rival University of Nevada Las Vegas. The Rebels have had the edge against the Utes in Utah’s first 2 years in the WCHL. The Utes are looking for their first win in Las Vegas despite multiple close contests against the Rebels.
The end of the season-opening road stretch comes in Tempe against Arizona State University. Utah will face the Sun Devils on October 26 and 27 in ASU’s brand-new Mullett Arena. ASU’s previous home rink, Oceanside Ice Arena, proved to be a tough place to play for Utah as last season ASU took both games on their home ice. The Skatin’ Utes look to bounce back in the Valley of the Sun against their WCHL rival.
Following a well-deserved bye weekend on November 3 and 4, Utah will play their home opening series against the University of Colorado. Opening night at Steiner Ice Arena at the SLC Sports Complex is Friday, November 10 at 7:30 pm MDT. Game 2 of the series is Saturday, November 11, at 7:30 pm MDT. The last time the Utes saw the Buffaloes on home ice, they swept them scoring a combined 8 goals in 2 games against CU.
The Utes will conclude the season series against Arizona on November 17 and 18. Despite a closely contested split on home ice last season, Utah swept the Wildcats on home ice in 2021. The Skatin’ Utes look to bring the brooms out at home for the second time in 3 seasons against U of A.
After 3 straight weekends of WCHL league play, Utah will host ACHA independent San Diego State University in SLC on December 1 and 2. This is SDSU’s second season at the M1 level. Utah traveled to “America’s Finest City” last season and swept the Aztecs. This series concludes the first half of the season for Utah.
Returning from the holiday break, Utah will have a 3-weekend homestand. This begins with GCU coming to town on January 19 and 20. ASU makes the trip to Utah the following weekend, January 26 and 27.
The Skatin’ Utes host UNLV on February 2 and 3. This is a matchup that many Utah Hockey fans and players have circled in red ink on the calendar. Last season, Utah earned their first WCHL win over the Rebels in dominating fashion 5-1. The Utes will look to try and muscle their first sweep against the Rebels on home ice. Additionally, Senior Night will be held on Friday, February 2 at 7:30 pm MDT.
Utah will end the season on the road in Oklahoma playing the University of Central Oklahoma and the University of Oklahoma. On February 8 Utah will first face UCO. The Utes beat the Bronchos at home last season in what was a major upset. Utah will finish off the regular season on February 9 and 10 in Norman playing the University of Oklahoma. Utah last played the Sooners at home where they won and lost in overtime.
The final release of the ACHA M1 rankings will be on Sunday, February 18. These rankings will determine if Utah has qualified for the National Tournament in St. Louis. If the Utes earn their first trip to M1 Nationals, they will be in Missouri on Wednesday, March 6.
