In Memory of Chris Russell
December 5, 2024
Salt Lake City, Utah
Utah Hockey is sad to announce the passing of beloved alumni, Chris Russell. Chris loved hockey and was committed to the sport in so many ways. Up to his untimely passing, he was a dedicated and motivated player, on and off the ice.
Chris started playing hockey when he was young, probably around 5 or 6 years of age. At this time, hockey in Utah was beginning to become popular among the youth community and Chris was one of the first players to join the Davis County Youth Hockey Association (DCYHA). After watching his brothers play at a higher level, Chris knew that he wanted to join in on the fun. According to friends and family, “He was always really athletic and a really great skater”.
Chris went on to wear #24 for Utah and played most games as Center, although those around him knew that he would play wherever he was needed. He played alongside his best friend and accomplished a life goal of his to play for Utah. His family were wildly supportive of Chris and always went to his games, even when they were away.
After playing for Utah, Chris went on to receive his Associates degree from Weber State University in Diesel Mechanics. He was a Field Service Manager for Crown Lift Trucks, where he supervised and trained other diesel technicians. Aside from hockey, Chris loved to travel. His favorite travel activity was to go on cruises and visit tropical places to relax with friends and family.
In between traveling and working for Crown Lift Trucks, Chris was playing and coaching hockey. He played in his own adult league as well as coaching the Viewmont High School team. During his time coaching for the Vikings, they won two state championships, which was a huge accomplishment for him and another one of his dreams to come true. He was a true Blackhawks fan but would take any opportunity to watch, play, and coach hockey where he could.
Chris made a huge impact on his surrounding community through hockey and #24 will always be in our memory. Our hearts go out to his friends, family, teammates, and all others that he was able to impact.
We miss you Chris and we won’t forget your legacy here at Utah Hockey.
