M2 preps to take on rival Utah State this weekend
December 5, 2024
Salt Lake City, Utah
To close out the year, the Utah Hockey Men’s Division 2 team will take on the Utah State University Aggies on Dec. 6 at 7:00 PM MDT and on Dec. 7 at 7:30 PM MDT. The matches will be split, with the first game taking place on the Aggies home rink, and the second throw-down happening on Utes territory at the Salt Lake County Sports Complex.
This double-header marks the second matchup of the season between the in-state rivals. The last matchup took place at the very start of the season in September, where the Skatin’ Utes secured a 4-2 win against the Aggies.
In the Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League, Utah currently sits ranked third with 13 wins in the season. For the matchup this weekend, the Utes have slight advantage over Utah State, as the Aggies trail the Utes with a fourth place ranking in the league.
The Utes come into this matchup after a strong performance in the 2024 Beehive Showcase. In the tournament, Utah only fell to #1 Montana State in overtime, but managed to hold down the fort in the rest of the games. In the end, the team ran away with three exciting wins against Northern Arizona University, University of Providence and University of Montana.
Throughout the Beehive Showcase, Utah fought until the end, overall maintaining their structure as a team and shutting down attacks by the opposing team. In their final game of the Showcase, the M2 Utes gave it their all against Montana, with a few spectacular saves by Marcello De Antunano and an overall thrilling display of hockey by the entire team. If Utah continues this style of play in this weekend against the Aggies, they will finish of 2024 with an impressive total of 15 wins.
Going into the new year, the Utes will be on the road, but won’t be far from home. On Jan. 9, Utah will take on another in-state opponent, facing off against Utah Valley in Provo. The Skatin’ Utes get a day of rest before once again going against Utah State on Jan. 11 in Logan.
For this weekend, Utah Hockey Broadcast will be available for the home game on Dec. 7, and will be streamed live. There will be no broadcast available for the game in Logan on Dec. 6, but you can stay tuned with consistent score updates on the Utah M2 Instagram.
