The ACHA West Rankings are out which means we now know the schedule for the First Annual Wasatch Cup, which will take place January 30-31 at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex.
The two day tournament is structured much like the Beanpot tournament in Boston, where the four teams here in the state of Utah will battle through two rounds to determine the best team in the state. The pairings for the first round are decided by the 3rd ACHA Ranking which has now been released. The highest ranked team will take on the lowest ranked team with the other two playing each other with the highest ranked team of the two being designated as the home team.
The Utah Skatin’ Utes will be the number one seed at this year’s Wasatch Cup thanks to their #3 ranking in the polls which is the highest ranking of the four teams in the state of Utah. The Utes will take on BYU in the first round as the Cougars were unranked and will be the number four seed at this year’s tournament.
In the other semifinal, Weber State will be the home team and number two seed, coming into the tournament with the #8 ranking in the ACHA polls. Utah State is the third seed and will take on the Wildcats, as the Aggies came in at #9 in the ACHA Rankings.
Weber State and Utah State will play in the first semifinal on January 30th at 5pm at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex. Utah will play BYU in the second semifinal on the same day, which will start at 8pm.
The two losing teams from the semifinals will play each other at 5pm on Saturday, January 31st with the higher seed being the home team.
The two winners of the semifinals will play at 8pm on January 31st to decide who will win the first Wasatch Cup. The highest seeded team will be the home team for the championship game.
