Salt Lake City, Utah
The University of Utah Men’s Division 2 Hockey has received a commitment from Defenseman Owen Melson for the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Melson was born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska. He started playing hockey when he was 3 years old, skating on frozen lakes and ponds. His first youth hockey team was the Alaska All Stars and continued to play competitive hockey for multiple Anchorage hockey organizations.
For the last four years, Melson played varsity hockey for West Anchorage High School and helped win the state championship this past season as well as receiving an All-Conference award. Additionally, he played AA hockey with the Anchorage North Stars as an assistant captain. The team won the state championship the last two seasons and placed 3rd at Nationals his Junior year. At the end of his Senior year 2023–24 season, they fell short by one goal to take 2nd place in Nationals.
Off the ice, he enjoys summers at the lake, golfing, skiing, and spending time with friends and family.
“Owen is a fantastic puck-moving defenseman and brings a lot of skill to our D core this season. He can skate with the puck and facilitate for others while also making exceptional use of his stick to take away lanes and cause turnovers,” said Men’s Division 2 Head Coach Nick Fornelius.
Melson plans to study Kinesiology at the U.
Utah Hockey would like to welcome Owen and wish him the absolute best in the upcoming season!
