PAC-8 Power Rankings #5
Some movers and shakers this week after Utah, USC, and UCLA all picked up some big conference wins this weekend. The battle for the third and fourth spots at the PAC-8’s should be good as we reach the halfway point of the schedule.
Number in parenthesis is last week’s ranking
1.(1) #7 Utah Utes (11-3, 6-0 PAC-8) 2nd in Conference
Last Week: 2-0 (Win vs Washington 6-2, Win vs Washington 3-1)
This Week: Beehive Showcase (#5 San Jose St (Thurs.), #14 UNLV (Sat.))
Utah remains perfect in the PAC-8 after a pair of wins against defending champ Washington this weekend. Up next is another statement weekend as they head to the Beehive Showcase against SJSU and UNLV.
2.(2) Oregon Ducks (10-1, 7-0 PAC-8) 1st in Conference
Last Week: 2-0 (Win vs Western Wash 4-3 OT, Win @ Western Wash 5-4 SO)
This Week: Home vs Western Wash (Fri.), Home vs Western Wash (Sat.)
Another weekend sweep for the Ducks as they move to 10-1 after a pair of tough wins over NAIH member WWU. They’ll play them again at home this week before they take on UW in a couple of weeks.
3.(3) Washington Huskies (7-5, 2-3 PAC-8) T-3rd in Conference
Last Week: 0-2 (Loss @ #7 Utah 2-6, Loss @ #7 Utah 1-3)
This Week: Home vs Washington St (Fri.), Home vs Washington St (Sat.)
It was a tough setback for the Huskies this weekend as they drop a pair of games in Utah. They’ll have to regroup as Wazzu comes into town for another rivalry weekend.
4.(5) USC Trojans (5-7-1, 3-3 PAC-8) 5th in Conference
Last Week: 1-0-1 (Tie @ #11 Long Beach St 4-4, Win vs UCLA 4-3)
This Week: @ UCLA (Fri.)
It was a great (and entertaining) weekend for the Trojans as they tied a top 15 team and beat their crosstown rival which resulted in a bench-clearing brawl. USC heads to UCLA this weekend for another tilt against the heated rivals.
5.(6) UCLA Bruins (4-8, 4-4 PAC-8) T-3rd in Conference
Last Week: 2-1 (Loss @ USC 3-4 OT, Win vs Cal 7-6 OT, Win vs Cal 4-2)
This Week: Home vs USC (Fri.)
The Bruins lost their first six games of the season, but have come back to win four of their last six, including this weekend’s sweep over Cal. They’ll have a chance to avenge their OT loss to the Trojans at home on Friday.
6.(4) Cal Golden Bears (4-6, 1-5-1 PAC-8) 6th in Conference
Last Week: 0-2 (Loss @ UCLA 6-7 OT, Loss @ UCLA 2-4)
This Week: @ Sacramento State (Sat.)
Another rough week for the Golden Bears as they dropped a pair to UCLA. On the positive side, they get a point for the OT loss and have a pretty easy weekend coming up against Sacramento State.
7.(7) Washington State Cougars (2-8, 0-8 PAC-8) 7th in Conference
Last Week: 1-0 (Win @ Gonzaga 5-3)
This Week: @ Washington (Fri.), @ Washington (Sat.)
The “Winter Classic” up in Spokane was a great one for the Cougars as they got their second win of the year over an undefeated Gonzaga team. We’ll see if they can carry that momentum into this weekend as they head to Seattle for another round with the Huskies.
8.(8) Stanford Cardinal (0-8, 0-3 PAC-8) 8th in Conference (On Provisional Status)
Last Week: 0-1 (Loss @ #5 SJSU 0-21)
This Week: Bye Week
The Cardinal remain the conference’s last team without a win, after a miserable 21-0 loss to San Jose State. They have the next two weeks off until they play Fresno State.
