Utah Hits the Road
September 26, 2014
Salt Lake City, UT
After a successful weekend against Weber State and Utah State at home to start the season 2-0, the University of Utah hockey team now hits the road for the first time this year to take on BYU and Boise State.
On Friday the Utes head down to Provo for the first time this year to take on in-state rival BYU. The Utes have had their way with the Cougars the past couple of years, winning 17 straight games against the Cougs as it stands right now.
BYU is coming off an season-opening loss to Weber State last Saturday where they fell to the Wildcats 9-4. The Cougars were outshot 64-20 in the contest and trailed early. Axel Boyer and Nick Bartholomew were the main goal scorers for BYU, each netting two goals in last weekend’s game, and should be the key scoring threats to Utah on Friday.
On Saturday the Utes will make the five-hour trip up to Boise to take on the Boise State Broncos, a team that they split the season series with last year at one game a piece.
The Broncos have yet to play a game this year as Saturday’s contest will be both their season and home opener. The Broncos have yet to release their roster but are expected to return most of their squad that finished 6th in the West Division last season making it all the way to the Regional Finals in Flagstaff, AZ. Saturday’s game will be another measuring stick game for the Utes as they take on one of the up and coming teams in the West Division.
As for the Utes, they are coming off two solid wins last weekend against in-state rivals Weber State 6-3 and Utah State 4-0 at the Utah Ice Sheet. Douglas Newell leads all Utes with three goals on the season so far, but several Utes are right behind him as scoring has been found from multiple lines so far this season. In net, Chris Komma is already 2-0 on the year with one shutout, posting a solid .941 save percentage so far this season.
Both games this weekend start at 7pm MST. Friday night’s game against BYU will be broadcasted on here.
