Salt Lake City, Utah
University of Utah Men’s Division 2 Hockey has received a commitment from Defenseman Zachary Olszewski for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
Zach was born and raised in Batavia, Illinois, a far western suburb of Chicago. At 5 years old, he started skating on the backyard pond during the winter months, and from the age of 6, played hockey with the local youth hockey clubs.
At 15, Olszewski made the Central States (CSDHL) Midget team with the Chicago Bruins. In 2021, during his U16 year, he had the opportunity to play 4 weeks with the Wisconsin Dells Ducks (USPHL). Over that summer, he played with the Long Beach Sharks (USPHL) team for the Chowder Cup in Boston, Massachusetts. Olszewski finished his senior year as a graduate from Batavia High School, while playing with the Chicago Bruins (17-3-1). This last season brought them to the championship round which provided the team (half of which were graduating seniors) with an excellent ending to their Club Hockey career.
He is known on the ice for his powerhouse hits, protecting his goalie, and shot from the blue line. The 12 years of hard work on and off the ice has paid off, he now has the opportunity of chasing his dream and goal that he set for himself years ago, to play college hockey. “I am very excited to announce my commitment of starting my college career playing as a Ute for the 2022-23 season,” Olszewski said.
Even though he’s from Illinois, Zach has always felt at home in Utah. With his grandparents living in Moab, he has spent every summer with them since he was 2 enjoying the many national parks and the beauty of the state’s geography. When he’s not on the ice, he enjoys mountain biking, rock climbing and working on his car.
“Zach’s presence on the blueline will be a welcome addition for our team in the upcoming season. His size and ability to move incredibly well will no doubt have a big impact for us this year,” Men’s Division 2 Head Coach Nick Fornelius said.
Olszweski is currently undeclared for a field of study at the U.
Utah Hockey would like to welcome Zach and wish him the absolute best in the upcoming season!
