University of Utah Hockey is proud to announce Katie Plyer as the Assistant Coach of the Skatin’ Utes Women’s Division 1 Hockey Program
Born and raised in Northern Utah, Katie grew up skating on her family’s pond in Tremonton. Katie always had a love for the game of hockey, but didn’t start playing until 8th grade. She went on to play high school hockey for Davis County Independence. They won the state titles her sophomore and senior years. During her senior year, she started playing for the Utah Lady Grizzlies travel organization.
From her time in that program, she was recruited by Trine University, a NCAA Division III school in Angola, Indiana. She played there while earning her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Athletic Training. Katie was a part of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) All-Academic Team as well as the American Hockey Coaches Association All American Scholar Program while at Trine.
Upon graduation, she moved back to Utah to attend the University of Utah for graduate school. She played for the University of Utah Women’s Hockey Team while completing a Master of Athletic Training degree during the 2019-20 season. Katie has since joined the Utah hockey staff as a coach and has loved every minute of it.
“I have loved making the transition from player to coach and being able to see the game from the other side of the bench. It’s been great to bring my past experiences and knowledge into this aspect of the game. Hopefully, I can help the players utilize their skills and abilities to reach their goals and become the best that they can be,” said Plyer.
“When Katie joined the team as a player we knew she was something special with her hockey mind and skill. Adding her to our coaching staff is a no brainer. She adds hockey IQ to our bench, the team respects her, and she is able to get the most out of players,” said Women’s Head Coach Rodney Stedt.
Utah Hockey would like to welcome Katie and wish her the absolute best in the upcoming season!
