Salt Lake City, Utah
University of Utah Men’s Division 1 Hockey has received a commitment from Goaltender Rhett Kimmel for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
Rhett grew up in Baden, Ontario, Canada. Growing up, hockey has always been a part of his life and he aspired to play at the highest level possible. He played the majority of his minor hockey as a part of the Kitchener Jr. Rangers program.
He began playing junior hockey when he was 17 years old with the Elmira Sugar Kings of the GOJHL. After two seasons with the Kings, he finished his junior career with the Stratford Warriors (GOJHL) where, unfortunately, COVID-19 interfered and put an end to his final season. However, Kimmel was fortunate enough to win his final game of juniors against his former team, the Sugar Kings, in the first game of the second round of playoffs before the pandemic completely shut down play. This is one of his fondest memories as not many players are able to say their final game of juniors was a win.
After Kimmel’s junior career ended, he still hoped to be able to continue to play hockey, bringing him to the University of Arizona Wildcats of the ACHA where he played for one season.
“I am very thankful for the opportunity I have been given to continue to play hockey while, at the same time, be able to further my education. This goal of mine has brought me to the University of Utah, where I am very excited to be a part of the Skatin’ Utes,” says Kimmel.
“We are extremely excited to add Rhett to our program. He is a dynamic goalie with quick movement and great coverage. He moves the puck well and often breaks up plays for opposing teams around his net. His work ethic on and off the ice is best in class and this will translate to success. I am pleased he will have the opportunity to show his capabilities in a Utes jersey next year,” Men’s Division 1 Head Coach Morgan Feenie said.
Kimmell plans to study Biology at the U.
Utah Hockey would like to welcome Rhett and wish him the absolute best in the upcoming season!
